How to Write a Teaching Philosophy
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
If you want to become a good teacher, you need to think about teaching. As with any skill, better teaching is a product of practice and reflection. In a later section of this chapter we discuss course evaluations where students evaluate your teaching. In this section, we address a different sort of evaluation: self-evaluation.A good way to get thinking about what you do as a teacher is to write it down. Formally, this is often referred to as a teaching philosophy, a personal statement of your teaching objectives, theories and values. It is a great way of comparing what you do in the classroom to what you want to do in the classroom. The following exercise will help you to prepare your own teaching philosophy statement.
INSTRUCTION
Imagine that you are writing to colleagues in your own field as well as to those in other disciplines. Write a one page typed “teaching philosophy” based on your own understanding of how and why you teach.Use the following questions to begin the thinking process. (You do not need to answer these questions explicitly in your teaching philosophy):
- What do you remember about your most influential teacher?
- How do you think learning and teaching best take place?
- What are your images and beliefs about undergraduate students as people? As learners?
- What do you consider to be the overall goal of a college education? How do the courses and the ways in which you teach contribute to a college education?
- What gives you the greatest pleasure as a teacher?
- How do your teaching materials and strategies (syllabus, assignments, assessment techniques, etc.) reflect your beliefs about teaching and learning?
COMPONENTS
Your statement should include the following components:
- An introductory sentence that attracts the reader’s attention, perhaps with a very brief outline of the body of the statement.
- Up to three main goals that you want to accomplish with your teaching.
- Concrete examples of the ways that you have applied your methods and materials in ways that support your goals as an instructor.
- A conclusion that sums things up, with an idea that sticks in the mind of the reader.
